When I heard Classic Toy Trains was receiving a RailKing Imperial Cab-Forward to exam, I got pretty excited. The Cab-Forrad design was i of the virtually creative and artistically satisfying locomotives to e'er ride the North American rail.
The Southern Pacific RR pioneered this locomotive pattern to haul long trains through the maze of tunnels and snowsheds that dotted its arrangement. Tedious Mallet steam engines in enclosed spaces proved a fatal combination for crews of conventional steam engines.
Past moving the cab and firebox to the front of the oil-burning locomotives, the crew was ahead of the frazzle, which made a life-saving difference.
The SP eventually rostered more 250 Cab-Forward locomotives for freight and passenger service. But ii survive: Air-conditioning-10 course no. 4219 in Oregon and AC-12 form no. 4294 in California.
OPENING THE BOX
Placing the O guess model on the rail, the eccentric blueprint stands out – cab up front, riding on a 4-wheel truck. ON THE TEST Track
This model is 27½ inches long and is designed for O-31 or wider curves. Information technology as well has a lot of pep. I tested it in conventional style and using the MTH app. It accelerates at pretty much whatsoever speed you desire – whiplash-inducing quick or don't-wake- up-the-babe wearisome. Information technology didn't balk at railroad train length, either.
I hooked up a couple of mixes of new and vintage rolling stock, ranging from xv to 20 cars, and the locomotive didn't seem to discover the divergence. The steam sounds were great; the whistle was deep and attending-getting. While I'm non a particular fan of crew announcements, they can add some fun to your operation and the dialog was pretty good.
